Knuckles Did Nothing Wrong
A Letter To The Editor

From Clarence Avery

I reserved all comments on the Knuckles issue until I could see the infamous picture. While I was disappointed in the fact that Mr. Knuckles, a married man, choose to commit adultery; he definitely did NOT break any law. I was also shocked that the women seen in the picture are not "young girls" as described by Front Page Africa. These were women who choose to engage in sexual relations with Mr. Knuckles. If the lady lying on the bed is a "young girl" then I’m still a 10 year old attending elementary school in Monrovia. That, I assure you, was a lot of years ago. The picture does not show underage young girls. They are responsible adults who choose to engage in ménage trios with an older man.

I definitely disagree with all those who are attacking Mr. Knuckles without having the opportunity to see the picture. If there is a law in Liberia against engaging in sexual relations with more than one woman, then he is definitely guilty. If there is a law against adultery, he is definitely guilty. If there is a law against stupidity, i.e. falling for a set up, he is guilty. Let’s get real; the only thing he is guilty of is letting his family down. He brought shame and ridicule to his wife and children. It is his obligation to seek the forgiveness of his family. The picture doesn’t show that Mr. Knuckles is threatening, brutalizing or forcing the women to do anything against their will. If he was being blackmailed by Rep. Snowe and his group, as alleged, then he did the right thing by not surrendering to their will.
The act of blackmail, using sexually explicit picture, is not new to Liberia. I remember during the Doe administration it was rumored that he blackmailed a prominent Bishop who was a staunch critic of his policies. Doe called the Bishop to the executive mansion and showed him the explicit pictures. From that day on, the Bishop changed and his sermons became more of the bible than about the politics.

Those who are trying to ride the moral high ground on this issue should remember that we are all human. The sin the flesh (lust) is very powerful. A lot of great people have fallen to lust. Quite recently, President William J. Clinton faced embarrassment because of his relations with a female in the Oval office. Clinton was not impeached because he had sexual relations with the female. It was because he lied about it. We are all victims of lust. Some situations we regrets, others we brag about to our buddies. If having sex is a denigration of women, then we are all guilty.

President Sirleaf did the right thing by seeing the situation from a clear perspective. She judged Mr. Knuckles based on his effectiveness as a member of her cabinet and not by his sexual trysts. If she went about firing people for adultery, believe me, no MAN would be left in her cabinet.
This whole issue is not about using women or young under age girls, it’s about a man who was caught with his pants down. He brought humiliation to his wife and family. He did not allow himself to become a pawn in Mr. Snowe’s game. He stood up to Snowe and said "go ahead and publish the photographs, I will take full responsibility’. The President has not fired him because it is a private matter between Knuckles and his family. He is a valuable member of her inner circle. I trust the President’s judgment. If she feels that the scandal has jeopardized his position, she will request his resignation. All we can do is laugh at a pot belly old man trying to be a Mack daddy.
LMAO!!
