The U.S. based Africa Environmental Watch (AEW)
says the circumstances surrounding the "deaths" of the two Executive
Directors of Liberia's Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in less
than a year are questionable.
In reaction to the sudden death over the weekend of the current chief administrator and scientist of the EPA in Liberia Dr. Alfred Armah, the Executive Director of the Africa Environmental Watch, formerly the Liberia Environmental Watch, Mr. Morris Koffa told Running Africa/WRAR-96 Internet Radio that in his view, "this warrants government's intervention for an investigation to determine why such sudden deaths, particularly its head".
The AEW champions issues of environmental
concerns that focus on eco-preservation, conservation of natural
resources, and protection of public health on the continental level.
Local media in Monrovia report that the EPA
has announced the death of its Executive Director Dr. Alfred Armah who
succumbed to a massive heart attack on Friday evening in Monrovia.
Dr. Armah who just took over at the EPA on
October, 1, 2009 succeeded the renowned Liberian environmentalist Mr.
Ben Donnie who passed away in March, 2009 after a brief illness.Dr.
Armah had served for many years on the faculty of the University of
Liberia and was a consultant to scores of non-governmental organizations
prior to his appointment to head the country's EPA.
The EPA of Liberia under the leadership of
the late Ben Donnie had become a more prominent in the last few years
due to its aggressive awareness campaign against local pollution of the
environment, preservation of the environment and the promotion of
collaborative efforts with international organizations including the
United Nations and the Africa Environmental Watch. The internationally
recognized Liberian authority and environmentalist Mr. Morris Koffa of
the Africa Environmental Watch expressed shock at the sudden passing of
the new EPA Director Dr. Armah.
According to Mr. Koffa," if the situation is
left un-probed, its could frighten potentially qualified professionals
away from vying for the position". The AEW official added that "the EPA
has now appeared to be a death trap for its Executive Directors".
