D.C. Mayor appoints another Liberian to high city govt. post

Posted May 15,  2008

Washington, DC: May 8, 2008:  The Mayor of the United States federal Capital, Washington, DC, Adrian Fenty has appointed another Liberian, George Banks as Commissioner on African Affairs.  Mr. Banks is one of several Commissioners appointed to advise the Mayor, and to keep him abreast on matters relating to the African Community, by providing briefings to the Mayor and District government agencies about specific needs and interests of African residents of the District of Columbia.

At a swearing in ceremony recently in Washington, DC, Metropolitan City Mayor Adrian Fenty extolled the role of African Residents in the Federal Capital, saying, “Without question, African Immigrants are an integral and vibrant part of the District”.  The Mayor’s Office on African Affairs (OAA) specifically ensures that a full range of health, education, employment, business, and social opportunities are accessible to the District’s African immigrant community.  The Commissioners serve as liaison between the African immigrant community, District government agencies, and the Mayor.  They seek to improve the quality of life for African born constituents and their children.  The District of Columbia is home to about 400,000 African families from about 50 African countries.

In his letter of appointment, DC Mayor Adrian Fenty expressed his honor to appoint Mr. Banks, a career administrator and Security expert, within the ranks of his government.  He noted that Mr. Banks’ appointment was credited to many years of his professional affiliation among his kinsmen, the African community which he said, has continued to play vital roles in the Federal capital.  He then challenged the new Commissioner to serve with the level diligence, which justified his uncontested confirmation by the DC Council.

The Mayor’s Office on African Affairs, created by an act of the DC City Council in March 2006, is the only office of its kind anywhere in the United States.

Mr. George Banks is Board Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sentry Security International (SSI), a major Security Firm operating in Washington, DC and New York.  He is also a licensed Private Detective.  In 2005, Mr. Banks received a special recognition from President George W. Bush, expressing gratitude to him for volunteering as a team leader at the 55th Presidential Inauguration.

While in Liberia, Mr. Banks worked extensively in the 1980s, in Journalism and Public Relations, including four years as Chief of Staff and Special Assistant to Former Montserrado County Senator Archibald Bernard.

Mr. Banks was commissioned in Washington DC, along with another Liberian, John Lloyd, as commissioners on African Affairs, in the Office of DC Mayor Adrian Fenty.
