Liberian president shakes up cabinet with justice system heavily affected

(Monrovia-Liberia):-June 9, 2009 President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has made new appointments in government affecting a number of Government Ministries, public corporations and political subdivisions of the country. An Executive Mansion release Tuesday night, named Mr. Johnson Gwaikoko, as Deputy Minister for Administration, Ministry of Public Works; Mr. Andrew S. Allakamenin, Deputy Minister for Administration, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Mr. Lavela B. Kortimai, Sr., Deputy Minister for Administration, Ministry of Commerce, Dr. Marcus Dahn, Deputy Minister for Administration, Ministry of Planning & Economic Affairs and Mr. Peter Ben, Deputy Minister for Administration, Ministry of Post & Telecommunications. The Minister of National Security, Mr. Peter Bonner Jallah, and the Director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Mr. Wolobah G. Zubah, have been relieved of their respective positions. According to an Executive Mansion release, the President has named Cllr. Christiana Tah as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice at the Ministry of Justice; Cllr. Micah W. Wright, Solicitor-General and Deputy Minister of Justice; and Mr. Sam Russ, Deputy of Justice for Economic Affairs, Ministry of Justice. The President has retained a number of officials at the Justice Ministry. They include Madam Eva Mae Mappy Morgan, Deputy Minister of Justice for Administration; Mr. Sylvester Gbaintor, Deputy Minister of Justice for Codification; Madam Annie Wesley-Swen, Assistant Minister of Justice for Administration; Mr. Abraham Fahnbulleh, Assistant Minister of Justice for Economic Affairs; Mr. Augustine Fayah, Assistant Minister of Justice for Litigation and Mr. Aaron Kparkiller, Assistant Minister of Justice for Taxation. The Liberian leader has also named a new Inspector-General of Police. He is Mr. Mark Amblard, who now becomes Director of Police, while Cllr. Tiawon Gongloe becomes the new Minister of Labor and Cllr. Philip Banks, the Chairman of the Law Reform Commission. |

According to the Executive Mansion release, other appointments by the President are: Mr. Yancon-Dargbe Nimley, Assistant Minister for Economic Corporation, Ministry of Planning & Economic Affairs; Mr. Stephen Marvie, Jr. Acting Assistant Minister for Regional Planning, Ministry of Planning & Economic Affairs; Mr. Ernest Thomas, Assistant Minister for Energy, Ministry of Lands, Mines & Energy; Dr. Puchu Leona Bernard, Deputy Director-General for Human Resource Management, Civil Service Agency; and Mr. Geevon Smith, Superintendent, Rivercess County. Others appointed by the President include Mr. Sampson Cephas, Assistant Superintendant for Development, Rivercess County; Ms. Mary Broh, Chair and Acting Mayor, Monrovia City Council; Ms. Letitia Reeves, Acting Mayor, Paynesville City Corporation; Ms. Miatta S. Tarnue, Acting Mayor, Bopolu City; Ms. Doris M. Sleboe, Commissioner, Wedjah District, Sinoe County; and Mr. Narroson T.Y. Kanyan, Sr., District Commissioner, Juarzon Statutory District, Sinoe County. The Liberian leader has also named Mr. David M. Kolleh, Jr. Assistant Minister for Administration, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sei Wonkonmie Gahn, Assistant Minister for Industry, Ministry of Commerce & Industry; Mr. Joseph Mayah, Acting Managing Director, Liberia Electricity Corporation; Mr. Vanmunyan Sheriff, Acting Deputy Managing Director for Administration, Liberia Electricity Corporation and Mr. Andrew Dean, Acting Deputy Managing Director for Operations/Technical Services, Liberia Electricity Corporation. Meanwhile, the President has appointed a three-member team to serve as Interim Committee to manage the affairs of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority, pending the completion of a professional competitive recruitment process that will lead to the nomination of Commissioners by the Senate.
