Former Liberian soccer star releases second CD

Known much in the past for his prowess in scoring goals on the soccer field, now a resident of Atlanta, Georgia in the United States of America, Dominic Brapoh is releasing his second CD. His fans call him Lucky Shango, a name that Dominic earned not on the stage, but on the soccer field even long before he played soccer on the national level for a Liberian first division team. Shango’s new CD titled I Mu Decali Je is expected to be a chart topper and a party rocker in the Liberian and African communities just like his first. Shango told WRAR-96 Internet Radio that the success of the first CD seems to be over shadowing this new one for now. He said jokingly, “It seems I am my own enemy here now.” But having listened to the new CD on a five hours drive from Houston, Texas to my base in Dallas this past weekend where I also saw Shango perform some of the songs from the new CD, I am giving it thumbs up. A man I have known for as long as I wanted to be a broadcaster, and during careers on the national level, little did I notice Shango’s singing talent. We first met when I was a young man learning to become a sportscaster with a local group, the Voice of We-Five Radio Club in the Monrovia suburb of Bushrod Island and Lucky Shango was a young man playing soccer for a small team in the area Blackpool of Jamaica Road. We later met on the national scene in our careers. He was now playing for first division side Mighty Barolle and the National squad, the Lone Star and me well into broadcasting also covering sports as one of my assignments at the Liberia Broadcasting System. (LBS). During all those years, unless the entire team was singing to warm up for a match, I do not remember hearing Shango sing alone on the bus or the plane when we made trips across the continent of Africa, a concern I did not hesitate to put to him in a WRAR-96 interview on the Saturday Show a few weeks ago. Shango said that he always thought he had musical talent when he played soccer, but the talent on the soccer field suppressed his other talent until he came to the United States. I guess one door closes another door opens. He said he was amazed by the way his first CD was received by the public. Like Liberians would say, if Shango’s songs from his first CD are not played at Liberian events here in the United States, then that event was never held. I have seen Lucky Shango perform now at two live events, both in Dallas and Houston, Texas. He is quite a performer on stage and a crowd puller. The new CD with ten songs includes a Gospel track, I Will Praise Your Name and a remix of the hit song from his first CD How’s My People Doing. The new CD, I Mu Decali je which also comes with a musical video, will be officially released on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at a star-studded event in Charlotte, North Carolina. Many Liberian recording stars including G-Man with whom Shango did a re-mixed version of the late Robert Toe’s football (soccer) songs (not on this CD), Black Diamond, Georgee-B among others and the Master of Ceremonies, a former Liberian Radio personality, Charles Russell. |
