Liberia beat Sierra Leone 3-1 in warm-up match

Posted May 5, 2008

The lone stars of Liberia on Thursday in Monrovia defeated the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone 3-1 in a warm-up match ahead of the 2010 World Cup/Nations Cup qualifying campaign.

Zah Kranger put the Liberians ahead as early as the 21st minute when he was given space and time to shoot inside the opponent’s goal area.

The Liberians were dominant for a better part of the first duration of the encounter but could not convert their numerous goal-scoring chances in the first half.

The second half began in similar fashion to the first with the home side putting the Sierra Leoneans on the back foot, desperately defending their goal mouth.

The Liberians finally got their second through Anthony Laffor after he took advantage of some suspect defending from Kemokai Kallon in the Sierra Leonean back line to tap the ball into the net to give Anthony Hey’s men a 2-0 advantage.

Kemokai Kallon was able to redeem himself as he also made the most of some bad defending from the Liberian team to pull one goal back seven minutes later for the visitors and set up an enthralling 25 minutes of action.

Both sides piled on the pressure in these last minutes, to the admiration of the fans who came to watch the encounter.

However midfielder James Zota ensured that the host team ran out comfortable victors when he struck a long range effort that beat the Sierra Leonean goalkeeper.

Liberia have been drawn in Group Six of the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign alongside the Teranga Lions of Senegal, the Scorpions of Gambia and the Desert Warriors of Algeria.

Sierra Leone will engage the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and the hosts of the 2010 World Cup, the Bafana Bafana of South Africa, in group four.
